The Karajá have long lived along the banks of the River Araguaia, in the states of Goiás, Tocantins and Mato Grosso. They are a group of about 3700 people. They speak a language from the Macro-Jê linguistic branch. An obvious characteristic of the group are the two circles tattooed onto their faces. They also do beautiful body paintings.
The rights of indigenous peoples over the lands where they live have existed for a long time and have been reinforced since the Federal Constitution of 1988: they are rights guaranteed by law.
